Merry Christmas, Today is a day to spend with family. Get some eggnog or cider and watch a nice Christmas movie or play a game. Having ‘down time’ over the holidays is important for resting your brain. If you have any ideas today don’t act on them just write them down. You can review them next week. As we approach new years start thinking about what you accomplished this year and what you would like to accomplish next year.

This is one of my favorite newsletters. I found it about 5 years ago when doing some research on Enterprise Architectures. There is a new issue every few months and it’s always worth reading. You can subscribe at the bottom of the pdf. http://www.objectwatch.com/newsletters/ObjectWatchNewsletter051.pdf

Sometimes (like right now) the client needs a ‘few’ more hours to get the project done before Christmas. It may be inconvenient but you must keep the client happy. As long as its not a permanent situation you should always work the hours cheerfully. When it’s time to make staffing cuts or promotion decisions they will remember who put in the extra effort. To be most successful you must learn how to be a ’servant’; being both helpful and beneficial to reaching their goals. You are not a doormat to those in management but an excellent developer will be passionate about the project and it’s success. To this end always try to help management ’see the light’ without ever making a nuisance of yourself.

You must take time to think! Don’t be too eager to get started. Spend some time mulling over the possible solutions and the consequences of each. When you take time to think there will be fewer mistakes and the project will be done much quicker. Check out this article on thinking vs reacting from Rands: Take Time to Think

I have been gathering resources for my upcoming Java News Brief on the Java Speech API. While reviewing the latest breakthroughs I found this great example of what can be done with synthesized voices on the MBROLA site. Enjoy: We Wish You a Merry Christmas I hope this puts you in the mood for a great Christmas and New Year!
