When projects are not working out and schedules are looming there is great value in being honest about the situation. Both developers and management often need someone to tell them No in order to force the issue. Check out this great article from Rands In Repose. Rands In Repose: Saying No

Sit down and list all the things you are thankful for. Stuff like family, health, friends and a good job make it hard to be unhappy. There will always be times when you need to put in extra hours because of bad planning or times when you need to stay late because something broke. Take advantage of the Thanksgiving weekend to relax and focus on the truly important things in your life, start with your wife, children and friends.

Most of the successful engineers I have met are avid readers. They have a habit of staying on top of the latest excellent books and therefore the latest trends. Many read 3 books every month, but this is not me. I average about 1 a month but I also read books on other topics like religion, history, politics and economics. At the moment I am reading “AJAX in Action” and “the Demise of the Dollar…”. I try not to read more than 2 or 3 at once because they become harder to follow. I leave my current selections strategically placed about the house so I am reminded when I see them. Always keep one book next to the bed. If you are not already reading set a personal goal of reading 1 book in the next month then continue it throughout all of 2006.

Some Eclipse IDE tips

The mouse has never been the fastest way to write code. I have always been amazed at those developers who have taken the time to memorize all the complex keystrokes needed to avoid using the mouse. Their fingers fly and they seem to write so much more code than anyone else given the same time. The more you can avoid that mouse the more efficient you will be when it comes to writing code. Here are a few keystrokes to memorize for Eclipse Alt-/ Word complete (No need to type out the full name if the IDE knows it) Alt-Shift-R Rename (useful refactor you need to know) Ctrl-Shift-T Open Type Dialog (Fastest way to open the source for a class you can’t find) Alt-Shift-X then T Run the open source file in JUnit (Alt-Shift-X has many other options) ;-) Special Note ;-) Special Note ;-) OCI has several immediate openings for solid Java developers. The basic skills required are Java, Servlets, JDBC, Ant and JUnit. Struts, MVC, Spring and Hibernate are nice to have skills but not required. Please call Ken Totten at 314-590-0204 or email hr@ociweb.com. Be sure to tell them Nathan Tippy sent you.

How much is your time worth? This is an important question for those of you planning to get wealthy as an excellent software engineer. How to earn 10,000 in one hour My experience has shown me that those who are successful in this field are the same ones who love it. If you don’t like development it’s very probable that you will quit under the stress long before your peers who do like it.
