The consequences of work and discipline

I was talking to my wife about work and it’s relation to an early retirement. I pointed out that if one is disciplined to save during their working years they will be rewarded with money to live on during retirement. Those that lack the discipline to save are rewarded with more work to do up until they die. She repeated this thought back to me, “Work is the consequence of a lack of discipline.” This is a strange statement because it sounds ridiculous but its not. We see this all the time both at home and at work. Those who lack the discipline to learn new skills or do a job right are destined to do more work than those who do. If you work smarter by disciplining your self to follow well accepted programming standards you will have more time to focus on other (more fun) activities.

The obvious way to find anything quickly on the net is to use Google, but I have found a few helpful tricks that may turn up even more interesting results without spending a lot of time.
  • Try google.com/blogsearch Google has been indexing all our blogs and they seem to be keeping it up to date with changes. As a result if anyone has written about a specific issue recently you will find it here.
  • Try wikipedia.com I am always surprised by the value wikipedia provides. Try looking up products, development techniques or technologies, you may be pleasantly surprised as well.
  • Try del.icio.us/tag Delicious is a social bookmarking system. I have been using it for about a year now and so have many others. By looking up the Tags that other people have filed links under you can find some real hidden treasures.
  • For lots of cool stuff try digg.com Digg is a more advanced social bookmarking system than del.icio.us but I have not found it to be a reliable way of looking for things. However there are some great little gems there.

Eric Burke has recently posted a tip on adding synchronization for your flash drive. This is a great way to put the power of subversion to work. SVN is so simple an easy to use that I would expect cool ideas like this to be very common in the hacker community.

To make a great impression as an excellent engineer always dress better than the average developer. You do not necessarily need to put on a suit but you should always have nice shoes. ‘Business casual’ is the most common description of what most people call working attire. Unfortunately this is often more casual than business. Don’t go overboard but do make sure that you avoid looking sloppy. A sharp crisp appearance goes a long way when making a first impression. Whenever I get a new windows machine there are a few tweaks I always make to the registry and settings to help improve my productivity by making windows a bit faster and/or more stable. Many of these tweaks are only helpful for specific users, there are also some tweaks that should not be done for basic users. The recovery points for example are a great help for new users but if you are running out of drive space and keep good backups this can be turned off. Here are 2 big sites with lots of tweaks and 3 of my favorite hacks found on each site.. http://www.xona.com/2004/05/22.html
  • Switch to Classic style Windows (may have noticeable performance increase on slow systems):
  • Remove unnecessary special effects (speeds up computer):
  • Enable “Launch folder windows in a separate process”

  • 9. Turn Off Windows Indexing service
  • 83. Keep Windows operating data in main memory
  • 85. Stop the ‘last access update’ from taking up system resources
